Visits by black bears have become somewhat of a regular occurrence in our township over the last few years and today we had another. A bear was observed this afternoon off of Jacksonville Road in the area of the Homestead development, a 55+ community. Since this was the first sighting in 2014, we are reminding the community that they should exercise caution if they see a bear. You can review the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Bear Safety Tips HERE. Birdfeeders were the bear’s primary interest today, as it went from house to house cleaning out the feeders. Residents are urged to move bird feeders indoors to avoid attracting bears. Out of an abundance of caution, residents in the immediate vicinity were contacted via our Reverse 9-1-1 service and advised of the incident. Notification was also made to the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife.
Any bear sightings can be reported to police by calling the dispatch center at 609-723-8300. Additionally, sightings, black bear damage, or nuisance behavior can be reported to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s 24-hour hotline at 1-877-WARN DEP (1-877-927-6337).
