On Monday, June 22nd at 6:04 a.m., police were dispatched to the Liberty 2 Diner on Route 130 for a reported assault in progress. Upon arriving, police met with the victim, a male employee of the diner, who reported that a white male was hitting and kicking the victim’s car that was parked behind the diner. The victim said when he walked out to confront the suspect and was immediately attacked by the man who punched him several times. The victim’s coworker came to his aid and the suspect fled in a white pick-up truck prior to police arriving on scene.
While on scene investigating the incident, police learned of a motor vehicle crash in Fieldsboro that resulted in the driver running from the crash location on foot and being struck by a passing NJ Transit River Line train. Mansfield officers worked with NJ State Police and NJ Transit investigators to confirm that it was the same individual, later identified as Paul Brophy of Mount Laurel, who had committed the assault at the Liberty 2 Diner. The suspect’s motive for attacking the diner employee remains unclear.
The assault victim from the diner sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
